Ecotourism is on the rise, and places that were once pristine and untouched my modern man are on the decline. I’ve spent the last 15 years traveling Western hemisphere, from the Southern edges of South America to the Rocky Mountains.
Years ago I stumbled on a beautiful country, Costa Rica. Costa Rica offered eco-tourism which was a word that had just been added to the dictionary. My first trip there was in 1995, and I spent a year exploring all regions of the country and was amazed at every turn. I returned in 2006 and spent another year going to many of the same places, and some new ones. While Costa Rica retains and protects is beauty, the experience was much different.
Depending on your taste, the change could be taken as better or worse. The primary change was the number of tourists and the amount of facilities to accommodate them. I found myself feeling more like I was at a theme park this time around. I enjoy going to places that are unpopulated and that make me feel like the first human to lay eyes on the beauty before me.
Recently returned to one of my favorite places in the world, the Dominican Republic. In the past I had done some exploring of the natural wonders of the Dominican Republic. I was impressed with what I saw, but there was absolutely no structure or sign of eco-tourism.
Upon my recent return I stumbled on a long time friend and business associate who has changed that, to a degree. His project began as small groups of locals going out to explore the wilderness. Over the course of a year it has developed into an eco-tourist’s dream. With certain special permissions, he has brought eco-tourists to destinations never explored by foreigners. These places include the highest mountain peaks in the Caribbean, virgin beaches, and sites containing some of most incredible art left by the Taino Indians.
Eco Island Adventures makes these destinations available to you, the eco-tourist who really wants to explore. We offer 4 day/3 night trips to three of most spectacular places on the island. In addition, we offer a 10 day adventure to all three destinations.
