Barahona

Barahona is one of the most important  and largest cities in the Dominican Republic.  Located in the south western part of the country, it has a very active port and is well known for its many ecotourism attractions. The city provides relatively easy access to Jaragua National Park, which forms part of the Jaragua Biosphere Preserve (according to the United Nations), home to some of richest biodiversity on the planet.

Must see destinations include:

Oviedo Salt Lake, which is renowned for its large variety of bird life

Bahia de las Aguilas, one of the most beautiful beaches in the world

The islands of Beata and Alto Velo, which were once inhabited by Taino Indians, later frequented by pirates, and can now be accessed by boat, making for an unforgettable adventure.

The Bahoruco Mountain Range consists of enormous lush green mountains that seem to be out of place in this very dry part of the island.

Last but certainly not least, Lake Enriquillo, the largest lake in all of the Caribbean, is only a short drive away. This immense body of water is home to the American alligator, 2 types of iguana, and the pink flamingo, all of which can be easily spotted along its shores.
