Constanza
Constanza is an incredible town that you wouldn’t expect to find in the middle of the Caribbean. Situated in the central valley region in the province known as La Vega, Constanza’s altitude is just shy of 4,000 feet. Temperatures range from 40 to 70 degrees all year round.
Less than 60,000 people call Constanza home, making it the perfect place for a mountain retreat. You’ll find good food, a gorgeous view of the Cordillera Central, and very friendly people.
Our Central Valley trips include a visit to the town of Constanza. The trip from Las Americas International Airport to Constanza is around 5 hours and is an adventure. Once you start your climb into the mountains at the Rio Jima, you’ll be amazed by the views. Within 3 minutes you’ll have a great view of the Cibao Valley and the Autopista Duarte. During the climb there’s a waterfall that deserves a short stop and lot’s of fruits and vegetables for sale along the road.
Constanza is the gateway to Pico Duarte, the highest peak in the Caribbean, the Ebano Verde Scientific Reserve, and Alta Bandera, the second highest peak. There is a small airstrip in Constanza used primarily for general aviation.
The town of Constanza was founded in 1907, but the first European explorers mention the presence of farms in the valley. Constanza was named after a Taino Cacique’s daughter and was named by Sir Robert Hermann Schomburgk somewhere around 1852.
