Hispaniola

Discovered by Christopher Columbus in 1492, the island of Hispaniola is one of nature’s most incredible islands.  Hispaniola is the second largest island in the Caribbean, second only to Cuba.  The island was originally inhabited by the Taino Indians whose population quickly decreased after the arrival of Columbus.

The island has had several names during its history including Haiti and Quisqueya, both believed to be names given by the Taino.  Hispaniola is home to the oldest permanent European settlement; now known as Santo Domingo, the capital of the Dominican Republic.  Columbus originally landed on the North Coast of the island in present day Haiti and named the site La Navidad.

Hispaniola is home to the highest peak in the Caribbean, Pico Duarte, which rises over 10,000 feet above sea level.  The island is situated between Cuba and Puerto Rico and sits on a large section of continental rock known as the Greater Antilles.
