Monte Cristi
Monte Cristi is small coastal town in the northwestern corner of the Dominican Republic. It is rich in culture and ecological diversity, and sits very close to the Haitian Border. Once a very rich shipping port in the 1500´s, the whole settlement was later destroyed as retribution for doing business with pirates.
It’s very difficult to see all there is to see in this amazingly beautiful part of the island. Rich in ecological treasures and amazing sea life, Monte Cristi is a must visit for the true ecotourist. Some describe the town as a ghost town because of the scarcity of people found on its streets.
No trip to Monte Cristi is complete without a visit to El Morro a 400 foot limestone mesa with a breath taking panoramic view of Monte Cristi National Park, where you’ll find gorgeous beaches, coastal lagoons, mangrove swamps home to manatees and exotic fish, off shore keys, and forested mountains amidst the semi desert like landscape, all making for a very unique geography not found in many places around the world.
