Puerto Plata

Puerto Plata is well known for its rich history and culture. Once a busy shipping port on the north coast of the Dominican Republic, it is now a popular destination for tourists from around the world. The town is filled with old world Victorian architecture, which seems to take visitors back in time to a simpler era in history. Puerto Plata is truly one of those Caribbean costal towns that seems to have been frozen in time.

Puerto Plata is home to the only aerial tramway in all the Caribbean. The tram takes visitors up to Pico Isabel de Torres, a national park, with a botanical garden and replica of the famous Christ the Redeemer statue found in Rio de Janeiro, all of this located at the mountain’s 2,600 foot tall peak, which provides visitors with an amazing view of not only the whole town, but all of the northern coast of this beautiful island.

Close by, visitors can partake in various ecological activities, such as hiking, rappelling through river canyons, observation of manatees, and bird watching, just to name a few. Eco Island Adventure also provides tours of the town’s 16th century fortress San Felipe, and no visit is complete without going to La Isabela, the scarcely visited,  first settlement established by Christopher Columbus and his crew, an amazing experience not to be missed.
