Santo Domingo

Santo Domingo is the largest city and the capital of the Dominican Republic.  The city is named after Saint Dominic and is the oldest European city in the Americas.  Santo Domingo is located on the South coast of the island at the mouth of the Ozama River.

The city is home to over 2.5 million residents, making it an unlikely place to start an eco-vacation.  In fact, all of our tours begin in the Colonial Zone of Santo Domingo.  Before we depart to your eco destination we’ll give you a brief tour and history of this area.  You’ll see the home of Christopher Columbus, the Catedral Santa María La Menor, the oldest cathedral in the Americas, and the Port of Santo Domingo.  The port of Santo Domingo was the gateway to almost all exploration during the first 100 years after the island’s discovery.

Unfortunately we only spend a short time in Santo Domingo before departing on our eco tours.  Since all of our tours begin and end in Santo Domingo, special arrangements can be made for a more extensive tour of the city.
